Bring your experience and connections to this great opportunity with christopher consultants, ltd., a leading Civil Engineering Firm based in the Northern VA area. christopher is looking for an experienced Survey Party Chief for our Lanham, Maryland office. The ideal candidate would have 8+ years' experience of field land and surveying practices and techniques with progressively increasing responsibilities.   This position is based in our Lanham, MD office and will be responsible for providing surveying services to our clientele around the Washington Metropolitan area.

Primary responsibilities of the position include managing projects (involving all types of surveys including boundary, topographic and as-built surveys and all aspects of construction layout), developing and maintaining client relationships, and market development.   This position requires the ability to operate independently from an office which will require basic proficiency with technology.


Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Broad knowledge of modern survey devices and modern survey methods.

Proficiency with conventional optical and digital total stations.

Experience with GPS applications including RTK and static control surveys.

Ability to improvise, calculate and respond to changing site conditions and client needs, with limited office support and supervision.

Possess knowledge,  education and/or work experience relating to property and right-of-way resolutions, deed and plat research.

Knowledge and experience of utility, infrastructure and building construction as it is related to stakeout procedures and principles.

Exceptional proficiency with basic survey and mathematical calculations and coordinate geometry.

Strong supervisory skills are required to direct and assist crew in performance of all assignments.

Experience with overseeing work quality, training and instructing crew members on company standards and methodologies.

Ability to read blueprints, plats, maps, plans, deeds, legal documents, site plans and field notes.

Strong aptitude in preparing neat and accurate sketches, field notes and field maps.

Equipment Maintenance and Supplies

Understand and adhere to all safety guidelines.

Participate in daily briefings/debriefings and ensure all tasks are being addressed in the field.


The minimum qualifications include:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

8+ years of demonstrated experience and knowledge of field land surveying practices and techniques.

2+ years of experience in responsible charge of field crew.

Strong overall experience with conventional total stations including Topcon and Leica products.

Working knowledge of Static and RTK GPS desired.

Working knowledge of Carlson SurvCE data collectors.

Entry level Carlson product experience, including Carlson Survey for AutoCAD.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

Requires the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and related personnel.
